Seventy Chevening Fellows from seven countries and eight different fellowship programmes were brought together for a special networking reception and dinner on the banks of the River Thames. With experts from across professional sectors and countries all convened in the same space, the evening provided a unique opportunity for fellows to form new relationships and solidify already burgeoning ones. The British Council Study UK Alumni Awards recognise and celebrate the achievements of international alumni who studied at UK universities. There are three award categories: Professional Achievement Award, Entrepreneurial Award, and Social Impact Award. On 3 November at the British Embassy in Mexico City, a fascinating conference took place titled Latest trends in international trade and its effects on the policies of the countries. Mexico’s Current stance: Globalization vs Protectionism. The Mexican Chevening Alumni Association (MCAA) partnered with the LSE Mexican Alumni Association, PricewaterhouseCoopers Mexico (PwC), and the UK Alumni Association Mexico to deliver this conference. They brought together high profile experts on international trade to debate what is a hot international topic at the moment. Read more

In September 2016, the Chevening Officer Excellence Awards were launched in order to recognise best practice within the Chevening network. The focus for the pilot awards was alumni engagement and, after a highly competitive process, we were delighted to select three winning posts: Brazil, Nigeria, and Mexico. Read more

Sandra at Fukushima Prefecture

From 8 to 15 March 2016, Chevening Scholar Sandra Camacho Otero visited the Fukushima Prefecture in Japan as part of a select University College London (UCL) delegation. The delegation, which included six scholars from UCL’s Institute for Risk and Disaster Reduction, was on site to explore the current state of reconstruction in the area, five years after the Tōhoku earthquake, and subsequent tsunami that led to the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant accident. ‘We can no longer be passive’ was the call from Chevening Scholar Yahoska Berrios on World Water Day 2016. The Nicaraguan scholar fronts a video aimed at the Chevening community which calls for greater efforts to help improve access to water for rural communities, given that the lack of water has a disproportionately negative effect on women and children.
