Class of 2019, Chevening Orientation is your first chance to meet all of your fellow scholars, whilst being formally welcomed to the UK by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office.

Please note that this event is compulsory. Non-attendance will only be granted in exceptional circumstances at the discretion of the Secretariat.

Travelling from outside of London

If you don’t already live in London, you will need to travel to the city to get to the ExCeL. There are a number of websites you can use to find the cheapest travel option:

Travelling within London

For those of you who are not familiar with London transport, more information can be found on the Transport for London website, which includes a journey planner tool and advice on how to pay. The ExCeL London website also has a number of tools available to help you plan your journey.

The ExCeL centre is in east London and the nearest station is:

  • Prince Regent

This station can be found on the Docklands Light Railway, and is in TFL zone 3.

Please note that you will be expected to use your travel top up allowance to pay for your travel and accommodation to Orientation. There will be no travel reimbursement from the Secretariat for this event.

You can use the event app to keep in touch with other scholars and the Chevening Secretariat as you travel to the event, and can share tips and advice about your journeys.

Finally, should any of you decide to travel by car or minibus, please be aware that there are car parks at ExCeL London but that charges will apply. More information is available on their website.

Dietary requirements

If you have any specific dietary requirements, please send this information to your programme officer (PO). The deadline for informing your PO is Monday, 23 September, 17:00 BST

Programme

A full programme for the day will be shared with you ahead of the event.

Dress code

Smart casual (or your national dress if you would like). Please keep in mind that this will be a long day and we do want you to be comfortable.

Cloakroom

A cloakroom will be available for scholars free of charge. Please try to bring only baggage that you require for the day as space is limited.

You will find the cloakroom to the right of the Capital Hall, on level 0.

Electronic equipment

Please note that although there is a cloakroom on site for scholars to use (free of charge), they will not accept laptops or any large electronic equipment. If you bring a laptop you will be expected to keep this with you at all times. The venue takes no responsibility for expensive electronic equipment left inside bags in the cloakroom, so you should keep it with you.

Dog show

We have been made aware that the Discover Dogs show will be taking place at the ExCeL on Saturday. Although the dogs will be based in another part of the venue, we advise that awardees with allergies bring appropriate medication if necessary.


Frequently asked questions

Do I have to come?

Yes! This is a mandatory event. Non-attendance will only be granted in exceptional circumstances at the discretion of the Secretariat. If you are unable to attend, please let your programme officer know by Friday 4 October 2019, 17:00 BST.

Can I bring anybody else?

You are not permitted to bring other people to Chevening events. This includes spouses, family, children, friends and other students at your university. If they arrive at the venue, they will unfortunately be asked to leave.

Can I bring luggage to the event?

If you are travelling to the venue from afar and have luggage, there will be a cloakroom available to store luggage at the ExCeL, however space is limited. We suggest you look in to leaving large items of luggage at the station as there are drop off points at all major London stations and you will not have to carry it throughout the day.

Will I be reimbursed for the cost of travelling to orientation?

There will be no travel or accommodation reimbursement from the Secretariat for this event. You will are expected to use your travel top allowance to pay for your travel to Orientation.

Will lunch be provided?

Yes, a light sandwich lunch will be provided. If you have any dietary requirements, please send this information to your programme officer by Monday, 23 September, 17:00 BST at the latest so we can ensure you are catered for on the day.

Can the venue be accessed by wheelchair?

Yes, the venue is wheelchair accessible.

Can I leave early?

We would prefer that you stay for the duration of the programme as important information will be passed across throughout the day. If you do have to leave early, please inform your programme officer beforehand.

Do I need to purchase tickets for orientation?

No. This is not a ticketed event.

Do I need to register before arriving at the venue?

Attendance at orientation is mandatory. Registration will happen on the day at the venue and you must bring your Chevening ID card with you. Your Chevening ID card will be given to you by your Programme Officer when they visit you at your university. If you do not have it, please do not worry – you will be able to collect it on the day.

Will there be an opportunity to speak to my programme officer?

Yes. There will be as short period of time to meet your Programme Officer and network with fellow scholars during the registration period.

Can I take photographs at the event? 

Yes you are permitted to take photos at the event. Please be aware of other scholars when taking photographs and ask permission if you wish to post them online.

Is there a prayer room?

Yes, there is a prayer room at the ExCeL. The prayer room can be accessed through the grey door next to the S9 entrance on the boulevard. Ask ExCeL staff if you need assistance finding it.
