The British Council Study UK Alumni Awards recognise and celebrate the achievements of international alumni who studied at UK universities. There are three award categories: Professional Achievement Award, Entrepreneurial Award, and Social Impact Award. From thousands of applications and nominations for these awards in their respective countries, we congratulate the following 17 Cheveners who were selected as finalists, and three as winners.
Mohamed Afifi (1999, Queen Margaret University) – Finalist, Social Impact Award
May El Tabbakh (2008, University College London) – Finalist, Entrepreneurial Award
Heba Kholeif (2010, University of Birmingham) – Winner, Social Impact Award
Heba studied Management of Special Education in Developing Countries. ‘Her studies in the UK provided her with qualities and skills vital to confronting educational and social barriers surrounding persons with disabilities. She is now helping many associations for the blind in Egypt trying to promote the idea of establishing several early intervention units for children with multiple disabilities.’ (British Council Egypt)

Ahmed Samir Elsayad (2001, University of Strathclyde) – Finalist, Professional Achievement Award
Tse Ming Chong (2003, Goldsmiths, University of London) – Winner, Professional Achievement Award
‘Ming Chong is a renowned contemporary photography artist and the Founder and Chairman of Lumenvisum. He has devoted himself to promoting contemporary photography worldwide by curating numerous photography exhibitions and community art projects. Ming Chong says his experience at Goldsmiths College inspired him in his career and it gave him ideas on how influential images can affect society, and encouraged him to devote himself to photography education.’ (British Council Hong Kong)

Abia Akram (2011, University of Warwick) – Winner, Social Impact Award
Chevener Abia Akram is the first woman from Pakistan to be nominated as the Coordinator for Commonwealth Young Disabled People’s Forum, the first woman with disabilities from Pakistan to receive a Chevening Scholarship and has been a leader in advancing the rights of disabled youth and women in Pakistan.
