On 23 March 2017, former Chevening Scholars gathered at the Radisson Blu Hotel in Nairobi for a gala dinner, the launchpad for the new Chevening Kenya Chapter.
The Chevening Alumni Group Network spent months planning the official launch and dinner, which was hosted by the British High Commissioner to Kenya, Nic Hailey, and attended by other officials from the high commission.
Over 100 Kenyan alumni turned out for a night of good food, good company, celebration, and inspiration. Under the theme ‘developing positive values in governance’, alumni Samuel Odawo and John Ekuru Aukot spoke passionately to those gathered in the room about the power of education. Samuel said ‘Chevening recognised my passion to fight for the marginalised’ in describing his work to promote the rights of people with disabilities in Kenya. Nic Hailey also spoke about the importance of the Chevening programme in building the relationship between Kenya and the UK.
