Settling into life in the UK: Top tips from a current Chevening Scholar

Current Chevening Scholar and Social Media Ambassador Hassan Hussain shares his top tips for navigating the first few months in the UK.

""So you’ve finally started your Chevening adventure in the UK! How exhilarating is that? But hey, hold on a sec—this is just the beginning of a challenging, but incredible journey.

In this blog, I’m here to share my top tips for navigating the first few months in the UK to ensure you have an experience jam-packed with productivity and joy.

1. Get to know your surroundings

First things first, get cozy with what’s coming your way. Get to know the city where you’ll hang your hat, scout out the university, hit up the supermarkets, and if you’re a food enthusiast like me, dive into the local food scene. Check out what events are buzzing around town, embrace the city and university culture, and link up with people who’ll be on your course. The idea is to get comfy before the real hustle begins!

2. Get involved

Next on the list, make fun a habit! The UK is a treasure trove with loads to explore. Whether you’re into museums, pop culture, or countryside bliss, there’s something for everyone. Schedule at least an hour every day to roam and wander! And don’t forget to spare a few hours each week for a sport or social activity. It’s the perfect way to foster lasting connections with the city’s crowd! For me, it’s all about long strolls with my fellow Cheveners, classmates, and Liverpool locals. Checking out the Albert Dock, cruising along the Mersey, or basking in the charm of Sefton Park—these weekly jaunts help me maintain balance, and they’re a great way to experience the UK culture!

3. Plan ahead

While the UK is super easy to navigate online—seriously, Wi-Fi is almost everywhere—make sure you have some essential apps downloaded. It could be the NHS app for your health needs, Citymapper for navigation, or Trainline for your travel adventures. Personally, my go-to app in the UK is Eventbrite. It’s my guide to events, networking, and all the social and professional jazz!

4. Build a support network

Now, while moving into a new phase of life is super exciting, it can also throw some challenges your way. So, let’s get real—connect with your new Chevening gang! They’re in the same boat as you, and trust me, knowing that you’re not alone in this journey eases those early nerves. Chevening Alumni will also be only too happy to share their wisdom, tips, and the coolest hangout spots with you… the perfect way to dodge unnecessary hurdles!

5. Stay connected

Moving into your new social circle, making new friends, and juggling everything can stir up feelings of homesickness. So, my tip is to make sure you stay connected with your family and friends back home. Share your new adventures and experiences with them. It’s like having a slice of home with you while you navigate your new surroundings.

6. Make the most of every moment

Lastly, this Chevening journey is a once-in-a-lifetime gig! So, kick things off with a bang! Embrace the fun, get that degree, and make those long-lasting friendships. And always remember, make memories that’ll last a lifetime.

Just as Avicii said, ‘one day you’ll leave this world behind, so live a life you will remember’.
