Applications for 2017/2018 Chevening Scholarships are open between 12:00 BST on 8 August 2016 and 12:00 GMT on 8 November 2016 (both midday UK time).

Chevening Scholarships are awarded to outstanding emerging leaders to pursue a one-year master’s at any UK university. The scholarship programme provides a unique opportunity for future leaders, influencers, and decision-makers from all over the world to develop professionally and academically, network extensively, experience UK culture, and build lasting positive relationships with the UK. 

A Chevening Scholarship offers financial support along with the opportunity to become part of the highly regarded and influential Chevening global network.

Applicants can choose any course of study at any UK higher education institution. Visit the UK government's website if you would like to learn more about what the UK is doing in your country.

How to apply

Applications for 2017/2018 Chevening Scholarships are open. The deadline is 12:00 GMT (midday UK time) on 8 November 2016.


Applications for Chevening Scholarships can only be submitted using the Chevening online application system, available through the 'apply' button on this page. 

Prior to starting your application for a Chevening Scholarship please ensure you have the following ready:

  • Essential: Three different UK master's course choices
  • Optional: English language test results (if you've already met the requirements) 
  • Optional: UK master's university offer (if you've already met the requirements)

Required documents

You can submit your initial application without these optional documents and upload them to your application at any point up to 13 July 2017. Please note that only documents in PDF format can be uploaded and documents cannot be over 5MB in size.

If you are eventually conditionally selected for a Chevening Scholarship, it is essential that you provide evidence that you meet the Chevening English language requirements and that you have at least one offer from an eligible course before 13 July 2017 in order to remain in the process.

Selection updates and timelines

If you apply for a 2017/2018 Chevening Scholarship you will receive email updates about your application status at each step of the selection process. You can also check this on the online application system by using the login details you registered with. Feedback

Due to the large number of applications received, we are unable to provide individual application status updates or feedback to unsuccessful applicants. Please do not contact your British Embassy or High Commission with application enquiries.

Application guidance

What is included?

  • university tuition fees
  • a monthly stipend
  • travel costs to and from the UK
  • an arrival allowance
  • a homeward departure allowance
  • the cost of one visa application
  • a travel grant to attend Chevening events in the UK

For scholars from Iraq, applications to return to third countries may be considered in exceptional circumstances if returning to the home country is impossible due to conflict. This provision does not affect the requirement for all Chevening Scholars to remain outside of the UK for at least two years irrespective of their country of origin.

Global news

This month, twelve Chevening/Gurukul Fellows will begin the twelve-week leadership course hosted by the India Institute at King’s College London. The programme, which runs annually, is aimed at mid-career professionals who demonstrate outstanding leadership qualities and have already achieved a position of influence in their home countries. Scholar group picture from Mount Snowdon
On Friday, 12 August and Saturday, 13 August, Bangor University hosted a group of 44 Chevening Scholars for Chevening's second overnight event in Wales. Scholars enjoyed a weekend of culture and outdoor activities in an area of stunning natural beauty in the UK. The group learned about the history and culture of Wales from experts at Bangor University. They then visited the impressive Caernarfon Castle before trying out a traditional Welsh folk dance, the twmpath, in the evening. Read more

The Chevening Secretariat is accepting applications for 2017/2018 Chevening Scholarships and some Chevening Fellowships via www.chevening.org/apply from 8 August until 8 November 2016. Chevening Scholarships are awarded to individuals with demonstrable leadership potential who also have strong academic backgrounds. Reading committees play a vital role in the selection of Chevening Scholars and Fellows.
