In this bicentenary year of the first publication of Jane Austen’s Emma, celebrate Jane’s birthday at Jane Austen’s House museum in Chawton – free entry, every 16 December. The literary inspiration continues with the Mulled Wine event, an annual favourite in Selborne over the first weekend in December, when Gilbert White’s House is decorated with traditional evergreens for Christmas, mulled wine is served and there are garden tours and apple wassailing.
