My favourite UK moments so far: Reflections of a current Chevening Scholar

Current Chevening Scholar and Social Media Ambassador (SMA) Felix Fomengia shares some of the best moments from his Chevening experience so far.

As a Chevening Scholar, my journey has been a transformative and life-changing experience.

I am already filled with so many unforgettable memories that have left a lasting impact on me.

During my early school days, the British High Commissioner to Cameroon, Dr Christian Dennys-McClure, visited me at my campus to hear all about my journey, progress, and overall wellbeing in London. This visit greatly encouraged me.

Another significant moment for me was attending the first ever gathering of all the 2022-23 scholars in one place, the Chevening Orientation. It was an incredible experience to meet new people and scholars from different parts of the world, share experiences, and build lasting relationships. At the Orientation, I also had my biggest moment: becoming a Chevening Social Media Ambassador, which came as a surprise to everyone at the event. Getting to document my Chevening journey is a great opportunity that I cherish so much.

Another significant part of my Chevening experience has been exploring the UK. I have had the opportunity to visit different cities and landmarks, learn about the rich culture and history of the UK, and create memories I will treasure forever. Whether I’m visiting the Houses of Parliament, the Tower of London, or taking part in any other Chevening event, I am always in awe of the UK’s rich cultural heritage and find something new to learn. From the towering castles and grand palaces to the quaint cobbled streets and historical monuments, the UK is a living museum that tells the story of its past with every step you take.

As a Chevening Scholar, I have had the opportunity to attend a number of prestigious events, which have been a great honour. In December, I was invited to the Foreign Secretary’s Christmas Reception. I have also had the privilege of attending several editions of the Marlborough Get-Together at Marlborough House, the Commonwealth headquarters. During these gatherings, I had the opportunity to personally meet many influential leaders and role models.

One of the largest and most memorable events I attended was the 2023 Commonwealth Day in the presence of His Majesty the King. Being seated in a room with over 54 Commonwealth countries represented and watching His Majesty the King deliver his first Commonwealth Day message, amongst other presentations and vibrant cultural performances, was an unforgettable experience for me.

I am grateful for all the opportunities I have received and am determined to use everything I have learnt to create a positive impact in my world.
