Leading the way with Chevening and the University of Bedfordshire

With the support of a Chevening Scholarship, Jessica Neves completed her master’s at the University of Bedfordshire. Now she’s using what she learnt to make a lasting impact back home.

For aspiring Chevening scholars, the University of Bedfordshire offers more than just a world-class education. With its career-focused courses and strong links to industry, it’s a place where students from all over the world can develop the skills they need to turn their ideas into impact.

With the support of a Chevening Scholarship, Jessica Neves was able to do just this, developing her leadership skills to help people affected by gender-based violence.

‘Before Chevening, I was a public servant and a manager of a non-profit and small food processing company in my country. We worked on community projects focused on gender-based violence prevention with a commitment to end sexual violence in our country.

‘As the general manager, I was responsible for managing projects, campaigns, resources, and the non-profit members and volunteers. But I felt I lacked the academic tools to scale up the organisation and achieve better results.

‘I knew I needed to study a master’s in project management, but it was impossible in my country, and studying abroad was out of my budget.’

This is what led Jessica to apply for a Chevening Scholarship. She knew that studying at a world-class UK university, and joining a global network of changemakers, would provide her with the expertise she needed to make an impact. She was particularly drawn to the University of Bedfordshire because of its practical, people-centred approach and real-world application to large-scale projects.

The University of Bedfordshire’s project management master’s programme gave me the confidence to believe that I am prepared to lead large-scale projects and teams.

Beyond the classroom, Bedfordshire’s welcoming international community broadened Jessica’s perspective, exposing her to a diversity of cultures, experiences, and perspectives.

‘Chevening allowed me to become part of a global network of leaders… [introducing me to] people from all around the world who are doing their best to impact the world.’

Chevening events provided additional opportunities for Jessica to learn from fellow scholars from Africa, Asia, Latin America, and Europe, who enjoyed sharing their thoughts and perspectives on global challenges.

Transforming knowledge and connections into impact

Today, Jessica is applying what she learnt in the UK to make meaningful change in her community.

‘I’m preparing a PhD proposal on civic engagement and social change in the fight against sexual violence — a direct evolution of my work and studies. I’m also strengthening the strategic planning of my NGO, now better equipped with tools gained at Bedfordshire.’

Looking back on her journey, Jessica adds:

‘Being part of the Chevening community is a huge personal achievement and a life-changing opportunity. The community is made up of exceptional people who are committed to positively changing the world and who are willing to share their perspectives, assist you, and discuss global issues.’
