Building responsible AI for global change with a Chevening Scholarship

Through Chevening’s global network and Lloyd’s Register’s industry expertise, Edson Casimiro is building the knowledge and connections needed to shape a safer, more inclusive future through technology.

For Edson Casimiro, studying an MSc in Artificial Intelligence at Queen Mary University of London with a Lloyd’s Register-funded Chevening scholarship has changed the way he thinks about technology and its role in society. ''

Coming from Angola with a background in computer engineering, AI, innovation, and entrepreneurship, Edson has spent his career exploring how technology can solve complex challenges.

‘Building technologies that impact thousands of lives is not just about writing great code. It requires a robust ecosystem, regulatory bodies, civil society, and interconnected organisations operating efficiently together.’

The UK represented a unique opportunity to learn from a country that combines world-leading innovation with strong systems of governance and responsibility.

‘I wanted to learn how a world-leading nation balances rapid technological innovation with a regulated environment that fiercely protects its citizens.’

A global network shaping responsible AI

For Edson, one of Chevening’s greatest strengths is the opportunity to learn alongside people from different countries, industries, and perspectives.

‘The Chevening network gave me the permission and the platform to truly go global… Through deep discussions with talented scholars from all over the world, I realised that the challenges my community faces are global.’

This global perspective has influenced his approach to AI. When he arrived in the UK, Edson saw his role primarily as improving the performance of AI systems. His Chevening experience has encouraged him to think more deeply about the responsibility that comes with creating powerful technologies. He is already putting this into practice by building AI-driven platforms like kulaship.com, which help students worldwide navigate the complex journey of applying to scholarships.

‘My real job is to make people’s lives safer and to ensure AI is built to benefit humanity.’

The support of Lloyd’s Register

As a Lloyd’s Register-funded scholar, Edson has also gained a unique perspective on how innovation can transform some of the world’s most important industries.

The partnership has allowed him to explore the realities of applying technology in complex, safety-critical environments, particularly sectors such as maritime where reliability and trust are essential.

‘Lloyd’s Register fundamentally shifted my understanding of industrial inertia – the complex reasons why massive legacy industries often struggle to adopt new technologies rapidly.’

Through his experience, Edson has seen that, in addition to adopting new tools, successful digital transformation requires leadership, careful decision-making, and technology that people can trust.

‘In highly critical environments where the margin for error is virtually zero, AI-based decisions must be transparent and explainable before they can be trusted with human lives and essential cargo.’

Edson believes that Chevening partners like Lloyd’s Register play a vital role in the Chevening experience, connecting scholars with real-world challenges and industry experience.

‘A corporate partner does far more than just fund your studies; they elevate your entire journey.’

Building a future where AI serves humanity

Looking ahead, Edson’s ambition is to become a global reference in AI – developing technologies that are faster, more reliable, explainable, and accessible, including regions where resources and infrastructure may be limited.

He also hopes to help traditional industries safely transition into the digital era and build new AI-driven companies that contribute to global economic growth.

‘I see myself as an entrepreneur dedicated to changing lives through a trinity of invention, entrepreneurship, and philanthropy… I want to build a more just world, where technology pushes the boundaries of what is possible while keeping human safety, equity, and prosperity at its absolute core.’

Through Chevening and the support of Lloyd’s Register, Edson is gaining the knowledge, network, and experience to turn that vision into action, using technology to create opportunities to drive meaningful change around the world.
