Chevening #OMGB photo competition

Show the world your most eyecatching photos of Britain!

Chevening Scholars have the opportunity to experience everything Britain has to offer, and we want you to share these experiences with us and the world. That's why we've teamed up with VisitBritain, the UK's national tourism agency, to launch the #OMGB photo competition. From now until May, you'll have the opportunity to submit your best photos for a chance to win a weekend trip for you and a guest to a British city of your choice packed with amazing #OMGB moments. The shortlisted photographs will also be featured at a photo exhibition at the end of the year!

Each month, there will be a theme for you to explore through photography:

Month Theme Hashtags
November Culture, tradition, heritage – Britain’s rich in these things, and they play a large role in what makes the UK an attractive destination. Capture snapshots of your cultural experiences in the UK.



December Winter festivities – As the nights grow longer and colder, and the heating and lights are switched on all over the country,  share your wintery and festive photos.



January Old and new – Britain has a rich history and an exciting future. The old lives side-by-side with the new in the UK. Capture any contrast of this nature and photograph it.



February Romantic Britain – Valentine’s Day is celebrated every year in February. Capture the romantic side of the UK, or document the things you've grown to love since you first arrived.



March Outdoors Britain – After a long winter, spring’s return is welcome. Capture Britain springing back into full bloom as outdoor activities are reintroduced into people's social schedules. 



April Street or contemporary art – Britain is home to a thriving art scene and art can be found in unexpected places. Keep an eye out for street or contemporary art and share.



May Diversity – Britain is proud of its diversity – both in terms of its people and its environment. As the year draws to a close, celebrate the bonds you’ve made in one of the world’s most diverse countries.




How to enter

1) Submit your photos each month via the link at the bottom of this page. 

2) You should also post your photos on Instagram with #OMGB and your category’s unique hashtag.

3) You should also tag @cheveningfco and @LoveGreatBritain in your Instagram post.

4) You should also include a caption that briefly explains the story behind the photo and/or why that particular shot was chosen in your Instagram post.

You can submit as many photos as you like. Three photographs will be shortlisted from each month’s entries. Photos for each of the monthly shortlists can be submitted up to 23:59 on the last day of the month. Any entries submitted after the monthly closing date and time will not be considered for that month’s shortlist, but can be considered for one of the 14 additional slots that will complete the final shortlist. The 35 shortlisted images will be announced on Monday, 12 June 2017 and will be displayed at a photo exhibition at the end of the academic year. 

Chevening and VisitBritain will appoint a panel to select the best entry. The winner will be announced at the photo exhibition.


Kathryn Smith is a recognised visual/forensic artist and curator from South Africa. A senior lecturer in Fine Arts at Stellenbosch University since 2006, a Chevening Scholarship allowed her to take a sabbatical in 2012/2013 to complete an MSc in Forensic Art at the University of Dundee, Scotland, cementing her particular research focus. She is currently a member of the Face Lab research group at Liverpool John Moores University, undertaking doctoral research and teaching on the MA Art in Science programme. Lottie Norman has over ten years of experience in digital marketing and content strategy, working for a number of brands across the UK, Asia-Pacific, and U.S. Lottie started her career at Razorfish London where she spent three years working on integrated social content campaigns for McDonald’s, O2, and Unilever. Her love and curiosity for the international landscape took her to Sydney for six years, which included stints at Razorfish Sydney before moving to a video content marketing agency with a great opportunity to head up the digital and social strategy team on campaigns for Tourism Australia, Qantas, and Spotify. Returning to London, Lottie joined VisitBritain as a digital content manager, to drive innovative and inspiring digital content creation for VisitBritain, focusing on combining her passion for travel with innovative, data-led digital content across multiple channels and audiences.

Anisha Shah is a travel journalist and photojournalist, specialising in emerging destinations. She began her career as a news reporter at the BBC, before leaving to become a full-time travel journalist and photojournalist after six years. Her writing and photography has been featured by BBC Travel, CNN, Africa Geographic, Lonely Planet, Huffington Post, Fodor's Travel, LA Times Travel, and more. Anisha’s tri-continental upbringing across Africa, Asia, and Europe ignited her fascination with world music, dance, culture, people, food, drink, art, and history, while a growing calling to report on conflict zones led her to emerging destinations.

David Osei is Communications Manager at Chevening. He is an innovative and personable communications professional with experience of successfully deploying creative, editorial, and strategic skills across broadcast, print, and digital media. He also has experience of managing projects and people in diverse and fast-paced working environments. David is passionate about disruptive digital technology, the future of broadcast, country branding, international relations and development, youth leadership, and the commercial aspect of the creative industries.

Grand prize
