Schumacher College is a leading independent centre for ecological studies, social innovation and transformative learning.
We recognise that the web of crises in which the world is caught today is not simply a set of problems waiting for solutions, but a deep challenge to the way we think about ourselves, our societies and our place on Earth. Through our short and longer courses we work for a more harmonious relationship between the individual, the community and the living planet.
Bound by a shared humanity and the web of life we believe that the individual and community have the insight, the skills and the power to dramatically shape the societies we want to live in.
Each of our postgraduate programmes is cross-disciplinary in their approach and focus on systemic areas that articulate human thought and action. We attract exceptional students and teachers from around the world who recognise the role of values in underpinning the societal instruments that we use to shape our world.
Students look to combine a deeper inquiry into values with the tools, techniques and teachings they need to enhance their ability as activists in service of humanity and the living planet. Our programmes are centred on a small residential peer-to-peer learning community of up to one hundred, located on the Dartington Estate in Totnes, Devon.
Chevening and Schumacher College
Over fifty per cent of our students come from outside of the UK with alumni in over 80 countries. Since our inception 25 years ago we have cherished bio-cultural diversity in our students and teachers as a critical foundation for deeper and more holistic understanding. The Chevening Partnership underpins diversity and extends our reach in finding exceptional individuals who for socio-economic reasons could not otherwise join us.
The Head of College Dr. Jonathan Rae says:
'We are very pleased to partner with Chevening and for the opportunity to attract and support exceptional individuals from around the world to be more effective agents for the change they want to see'.
