British Library

The British Library is the national library of the United Kingdom and one of the world’s greatest research libraries. Our collections encompass all fields of knowledge in hundreds of languages, covering 3,500 years from some of the earliest written records to the digital collections of the present day; and range over all formats. Our research and professional expertise spans traditional and digital scholarship in all its forms. Jointly, these intellectual assets represent a vast, rich, and diverse resource to support research into, and cultural engagement with, the human experience.

Chevening and the British Library

The British Library’s partnership with Chevening will build a community of fellows who will be ambassadors for the value of professional development at the British Library. These fellowships will capitalise on the breadth and depth of the Library’s collections and staff expertise, enable new types of research, inform strategy, generate research resources for the future, and foster international collaboration. They will provide fellows with skills, experience, and opportunities to enrich their own careers, and aid the organisational development of the library.

Traditional scholarships have always sought to reach across boundaries of language, politics, faith, and geography. Chevening Fellows hosted at the library will be part of that tradition, bringing with them fresh insights and new perspectives, and taking away–we hope–an experience that informs all our futures.

Allan Sudlow, Head of Research Development at the library, added:

'We are proud to partner with Chevening to enhance the cultural, social, and research impact of the British Library, and support professional development in an international context.'

Who do the British Library support?

The British Library have generously agreed to support three fellowship opportunities for applicants from Europe, the Middle East and North Africa, and South, Central, and East Asia, with fellows participating in one of two different research projects:

  • Endangered Archives – North Africa or the Middle East
  • Academy and society in the Balkans 1850-1950
  • Exploring and enhancing the British Library’s Turkic-language collections
