As part of its global scholarship scheme, Chevening has joined with the N8 Research Partnership to provide expanded opportunities for Chinese scholars to study in the north of England. The N8 Research Partnership is a consortium of universities, which aims to maximise impact, promote collaboration, establish innovative research capabilities and programmes, and drive economic growth. This month, twelve Chevening/Gurukul Fellows will begin the twelve-week leadership course hosted by the India Institute at King’s College London. The programme, which runs annually, is aimed at mid-career professionals who demonstrate outstanding leadership qualities and have already achieved a position of influence in their home countries. The Chevening application process can seem overwhelming for anyone who is doing it for the first time. The British High Commission in Yaoundé, Cameroon have been harnessing the power of the network to help applicants navigate the process. In a new initiative at the high commission, both alumni and current scholars were asked to each coach a potential applicant through the application process. The coaches did not write the application for anyone, but gave tips, moral support, and guidance on how to bring out the best of themselves in their application. Read more

On 25 August 2016, 66 guests gathered at the British embassy in Baku to witness the establishment of the Chevening Alumni Association Azerbaijan (CAAA). Guests were from many sectors of society including journalists, university academics, and the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs. Narmin Rahimli, Chevening Alumna (2014) and new president of the association, led the initiative for an exclusive group for Chevening Alumni in Azerbaijan. GSK Scholars

Five scholars from three west African countries have been selected for Chevening/GSK Scholarships. Eric Besong, Tim Fabrice Tientcheu (both Cameroon), Urban Akagwire (Ghana), Chinedu Chikwendu, and Chigbo Chikwendu (both Nigeria) were selected for these awards. They will undertake healthcare-related subjects at universities in Edinburgh, Nottingham, and London. Read more

Scholar group picture from Mount Snowdon

On Friday, 12 August and Saturday, 13 August, Bangor University hosted a group of 44 Chevening Scholars for Chevening's second overnight event in Wales. Scholars enjoyed a weekend of culture and outdoor activities in an area of stunning natural beauty in the UK. The group learned about the history and culture of Wales from experts at Bangor University. They then visited the impressive Caernarfon Castle before trying out a traditional Welsh folk dance, the twmpath, in the evening. Read more

The Chevening Secretariat is accepting applications for 2017/2018 Chevening Scholarships and some Chevening Fellowships via www.chevening.org/apply from 8 August until 8 November 2016. Chevening Scholarships are awarded to individuals with demonstrable leadership potential who also have strong academic backgrounds. The scholarship offers financial support to study for a master’s degree at any UK university and the opportunity to become part of an influential global network of 46,000 alumni.  Read more

Do you want to be involved in the selection of the world's future leaders? If so, we are currently recruiting for the 2017/2018 Chevening Reading Committees. Reading committees play a vital role in the selection of Chevening Scholars and Fellows. Each committee is comprised of a regional assessor and an academic assessor, who assess applications from one or more countries from a particular region of the world. Read more

The first ever Japan Chevening Alumni Network (JCAN) event took place on 26 April 2016 in Tokyo. Over 30 alumni gathered at Watahan Ginza Gallery for an evening of professional networking, dialogue, and discovery. Julia Longbottom, Deputy Head of Mission at the British Embassy in Tokyo, was guest of honour in acknowledgement of the support the British Embassy had given in the development of the new association.  Read more
