1,890 Chevening Scholars came together to celebrate a successful year as part of the programme on Wednesday, 5 July at London’s historic Alexandra Palace. It was a chance for scholars to say goodbye to one another, look back on a year of study and cultural activities in the UK, and also to open up new opportunities as the scholars become part of the global Chevening Alumni network. The Chevening application process can seem overwhelming for anyone who is doing it for the first time. The British High Commission in Yaoundé, Cameroon have been harnessing the power of the network to help applicants navigate the process. In a new initiative at the high commission, both alumni and current scholars were asked to each coach a potential applicant through the application process. The coaches did not write the application for anyone, but gave tips, moral support, and guidance on how to bring out the best of themselves in their application. Read more

GSK Scholars

Five scholars from three west African countries have been selected for Chevening/GSK Scholarships. Eric Besong, Tim Fabrice Tientcheu (both Cameroon), Urban Akagwire (Ghana), Chinedu Chikwendu, and Chigbo Chikwendu (both Nigeria) were selected for these awards. They will undertake healthcare-related subjects at universities in Edinburgh, Nottingham, and London. Read more

‘We can no longer be passive’ was the call from Chevening Scholar Yahoska Berrios on World Water Day 2016. The Nicaraguan scholar fronts a video aimed at the Chevening community which calls for greater efforts to help improve access to water for rural communities, given that the lack of water has a disproportionately negative effect on women and children. The Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) and global healthcare company GSK have announced a new partnership that will enable future leaders in health-related professions to study in the UK under a Chevening/GSK Scholarship. Read more

Nearly 40 Chevening Scholars participated in roundtable discussions with staff at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office in order to strengthen mutual understanding of the UK’s engagement with Africa, and the continent’s future prospects. Read more
