To mark Human Rights Day, the British embassy in Jakarta and Chevening Alumni Association Indonesia ran a competition called 'Chevening Diversity: 1 minute film challenge' to promote promote cultural and religious tolerance. Entrants were asked to produce a one minute film about religious and cultural diversity, which were then uploaded to a dedicated YouTube channel. Read more

Applications for the 2018/2019 round may have closed on 7 November, but Turkmenistan's Chevening Officer Murad Kakajykov has continued marketing, with staff from the embassy attending the Education and Sport annual exhibition in Ashgabat on 9-10 November 2017 to promote the programme. Read more

Last October, Sifu Albert Law of Wan Kam Leung Practical Wing Chun travelled from Hong Kong to Beijing to instruct Chevening Alumni and applicants on how to use the art of Wing Chun for self-defence.  Read more

Chevening officers from across the Middle East and North Africa gathered in Dubai for a three-day regional conference in December 2017, during which they also had the opportunity to meet with Chevening Alumni. Chevening officers are responsible for marketing to applicants, selecting scholars, and engaging with alumni in their respective countries. Regional workshops provide a valuable opportunity for them to receive training, share best practice with one another, and discuss some of the particular opportunities and challenges for Chevening in their region. Chevening Alumna Khongorzul Amarsanaa (Zola) has dedicated her life to eliminating violence against women and children in Mongolia, especially child sexual abuse. Last month, her efforts, as well as those of the many volunteers at Beautiful Hearts Against Sexual Violence (Beautiful Hearts), were recognised at a global awards ceremony in London. Read more

This month, Chevening Alumni in Bulgaria officially relaunched the Bulgarian Chevening Association at a reception hosted by Her Excellency Mrs Emma Hopkins, OBE, British Ambassador to Bulgaria. Set at the British Residence in Sofia, Cheveners gathered to network and discuss plans for building a strong, engaged alumni community. About forty Cheveners attended the reception, exchanging memories about their time spent in the UK, information about professional development, and future plans. Read more

In the shadow of Guizhou Province’s highest peak, Chevening Alumni and future applicants from across northeast and southwest China came together for China’s annual Chevening Conference from 22-23 September. Coordinated by China Chevening Alumni in collaboration with the British Consulate General Chongqing, the British Embassy Beijing and the Zoological Society of London, the conference aimed to draw attention to some of the most pressing issues faced by people, cultures, and ecosystems, both domestically and around the world.
